Longbridge 100 Backyard Ultra this Summer

Longbridge 100 Backyard Ultra this Summer

Run for Wolo On The Longbridge 100 Backyard Ultra

We’re looking forward to The Longbridge 100 Backyard (Winter) on 21 June. Longbridge (Wolo HQ) is the ancient name for the area we now call Litlington. The backyard concept is a ‘yard’ the runners will complete every hour on the hour (in this case a 623ft elevation of ancient Sussex download near our clubhouse). The winner? The runner that completes just one yard more than any other.

Brutal but Beautiful - Welcome to the inaugural running of The Longbridge Backyard Ultra. For those who have not taken part in a backyard ultra before then you’re in for a treat. It is a last-man/woman-standing event where you must begin a new lap on the hour, every hour. The race will only end when there is just one more runner remaining to start a lap. It’s sure to be an exciting and enjoyable event for runners and spectators alike with all the emotions guaranteed. There is a Winter and Summer event.

Whilst we do want to attract runners who can compete for days, we also want to stress that this event is open to everyone, especially if you haven’t taken part in a Backyard before. You will have so much support from myself, the team, and volunteers as well as other runners.

What are the specific rules regarding the Back Yard Ultra?

  • The course will be at least 4.167 miles long.

  • The starting corral will stay the same size throughout the event. When the bell rings at the start of the lap on the hour then you must be inside the starting corral. If you are not then you’ll receive a DNF and not be allowed to continue.

  • Each loop starts precisely 1 hour after the last, and warnings will be given at 3, 2, and 1 minute prior to the start of the lap. All competitors must start at the bell (no late starts). Each loop must be completed within an hour to be counted… including the final lap.

  • Except for restrooms, competitors may not leave the course until each loop is completed

  • No non-competitors on the course (including eliminated runners) and no personal aid is allowed during the loop. This includes being passed items or handing a jacket back to your support team, once inside the corral or the next lap has begun. You can only have assistance between finishing one lap and entering the starting corral for the next lap. Once the runner starts the lap they must be fully by themselves. Cheering and support from team members are allowed from the race HQ and corral only.

  • No artificial aids (including trekking poles).

  • Slower runners must allow faster ones to pass

  • If no runner can start one more loop than anyone else, there is no winner.

  • All runners must wear a running watch to record each loop and their cumulative distance.

More information about the event can be found using the link below:

We are a carbon neutral event...

This wonderful but challenging vineyard run takes place on the Rathfinny Wine Estate the day after World Earth Day and raises money for local cancer charity the WOLO foundation.

This is a carbon neutral event and there will be no single use plastics in use on race day. We recently appeared in Damian Hall’s new book ‘We can’t Run Away from This’ and also appeared in Runners World Magazine as one of the best races in the UK to run in April.  As a co-founder of The Green Runners it’s important for me to ensure that this race doesn’t impact on the local environment. The Green Runners mission is ‘Running without the footprint’ and has 4 pillars that determine what we do.

1. How we travel?

2. How we kit up?

Wolo Foundation
Helping to improve the quality of life of families in Sussex affected by cancer.

What is Wolo?
Wolo stands for ‘we only live once’, the perfect way to describe their ethos - to make the most of each day. Life is a blessing and we need to enjoy it; doing the things we love, with the ones we love.

Husband and wife team, Justin and Fler Wright set up Wolo Foundation after a cancer diagnosis of their own. With three young children to support, they were shocked at what little help there was out there for families like theirs. Knowing they didn’t want others to go through it like they did, ignited a little flame inside their hearts - and that’s how the idea began.

Wolo Foundation registered as a charity in 2020 and helps families living in Sussex through their cancer journeys. They support them by offering practical help and support to make their day-to-day lives easier. They work with other charities, local businesses and communities to offer families a wealth of services to support them through diagnosis, treatment and beyond.

Who do Wolo help?
Any family living in Sussex with a child or children under the age of 16 years at the point of diagnosis. They support all family members, whether it be an adult or child with a diagnosis - siblings and partners are supported too. They currently have almost 100 families and upwards of 200 children in their Wolo community.

How do Wolo help?
Every family is unique, and every cancer is different. Wolo’s bespoke approach recognises that people don’t always know what they need. Wolo offers all family members emotional guidance and practical help. From mental health support and complementary therapies, to practical help with cleaning, childcare, will writing or home maintenance issues. Nothing is too much trouble.

Regular family events help to reduce loneliness and isolation and encourage new friendships. Tickets to local attractions and short family breaks help to ensure families can spend quality time together making memories.

Wolo’s work is about practical help, health and well-being and developing long lasting relationships. Ultimately they want to increase life enhancing experiences for the person with cancer and their family, and try to encourage everyone to live their best lives, day-by-day

How can you help?
Wolo are looking for anyone who can offer a service to a family going through cancer treatment - whether it be therapy, childcare, legal help, memory making opportunities, counselling, gardening, decorating, car maintenance or a meal - literally anything! These can all funded through the charity. Wolo are passionate about collaboration with businesses, community groups and other charities to help make a difference to the lives of local families going through cancer.

Wolo hold a variety of fundraising events throughout the year, and are always looking for willing participants who want to help raise funds by doing a skydive, wing walk, ice bath or similar.

Wolo are also seeking 100 businesses/CEO’s to join the exclusive Wolo 100 club. To join, you need to commit to donating £100 per month to Wolo, for a minimum of 12 months. This regular income means Wolo can spend their time directly supporting families in need - the number of families they are supporting has grown by over 1333% in 2.5 years. In return, members will receive priority invitations to events such as the WoloBall (11/3/23), opportunities to network with like-minded individuals and direct access to support should any of your workforce receive a diagnosis.

Statistics show that 1 in 2 people in the UK born after 1960 will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Life is precious - we need to make the most of it - we only live once - Wolo!

contact@wolofoundation.org

Do not underestimate this challenge!  It's a great one to see in the New Year!

Remember, you are not alone, we are all in this together - there's a facebook group for us all to chat and motivate each other.

The general rules: you can run/walk as many times as you want in the day to make up the distance/step count.  So do it in one, or break it up.  Pairs/family/team entries - you can do the distance however you choose - split it or take it in turns, entirely up to you.
Solo runners/walkers - you have 24 hours to complete the distance.  We would recommend thinking about your recovery, try and have a big a gap as possible between your runs.

The cost is £31 per entry, which includes one bespoke medal.  You can also create your own fundraising page for Wolo if you would like to raise some more funds.

If you need any help or have any questions, please email marcos@wolofoundation.org

The funds you help to raise will help many families in Sussex on their cancer journeys - you can read more about the work Wolo does at www.wolofoundation.org

Wolo Wim Hof Method Fundamentals Workshop

Wolo Wim Hof Method Fundamentals Workshop

Wim Hof Method Fundamentals workshop with Will Van Zyl by Wolo Foundation

Date: Sunday 17th July
Time: 2pm onwards
Duration: 4 hours
Location: Peelings Manor Barns, Hankham Road, Hankham Pevensey East Sussex BN24 5AP

Join us for ice baths and breath work at the beautiful peeling Manor Barns, East Sussex with a qualified Wim Hof Instructor.

Wolo Foundation knows how important nature is to our mental and physical health, especially when life becomes challenging. We need to learn how to calm the mind and improve our wellbeing. We invite you to join us at Peelings Manor Barns, to experience for yourself the power of disconnecting from the outside world and re-connecting with nature.

We have great pleasure in welcoming Will Van Zyl to Wolo on 17th July. Will is one of the UKs leading and highly rated Wim Hof Method instructors, trained by the man himself.

Will is quoted in saying:

"We have an incredible Innate Intelligence within us that governs every action and reaction of our bodies and minds.

Every living thing - every part of Life - has this.

Learning to connect with it, feel it and harness it will help us become strong again in Mind, Heart and Body.

With it we can truly Open Up to Life."

We will be led by Will though the 3 pillars of the Wim Hof Method: Breathing Technique, Cold Exposure & Commitment. Find out how you can utilize oxygen and cold exposure to optimize body & mind and learn about the underlying physiology. He will then lead us through the breath work session and an (optional) ice bath. At the end there is ample room for reflection, and the Instructor is there to answer questions throughout the workshop.

Whether you are looking to improve mental or physical performance, relieve symptoms related to an illness, or are just curious to find out what the Wim Hof Method is all about— a WHM workshop offers something for everyone.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is suitable for everyone but does require a basic level of health. Out of precaution, we advise against participation during pregnancy, or if you are epileptic. People with cardiovascular issues, or any other serious health conditions should always consult a medical professional before starting the Wim Hof Method.

There will be hot drinks and snacks available throughout the session.

Approximate timings:

1400: Guests arrive
1430: Introduction to the session.
1440: WHM session lead by Will Van Zyl;

  • Experience the techniques

  • Explain the underlying mechanisms at play and benefits of cold exposure

  • Integrate into daily life by defining a simple plan of action.

1800: Food, refreshments and reflection time
1845/1900:Session ends.

What to bring?

  • Swim suit/trunks

  • Towel

  • Warm clothes

If you have no prior experience with cold exposure, we recommend you finish your showers cold in the days leading up to the workshop. This may be overwhelming at first, but just try to relax, focus on your breath, and bring it into a controlled, steady rhythm.

Fundraising

This event is a fundraising event in aid of Wolo Foundation.
A £50 deposit is required upon booking to secure your space.

By signing up, you agree to raise £150 for Wolo Foundation - to help improve the quality of lives of families affected by cancer in Sussex. A fundraising page will be automatically created for you during the sign up process. If you prefer, you can donate the whole amount yourself without the need to fundraise. The ice bath is optional; but if you are fundraising, you need to be prepared to participate - as your sponsors will want to see the photos!

Please note, due to the personal nature of this process, we will not be inviting spectators. Photography and videoing of your own ice bath will be permitted.

Over 12,000 runners take part in the marathon each April, enjoying a course that starts in Preston Park at 9.45am, snakes its way through the city centre, along the glorious seafront and finishes at the iconic Madeira Drive in front of thousands of cheering spectators.

The course bests for the men and women are well under 2hrs10min and 2:29, making it the second-fastest marathon in the UK. It is also the second-largest marathon in the UK and eighth-largest in Europe.

BM10K

In 2014, the super-fast BM10k was added to the weekend schedule and immediately stamped its importance on the rankings with the second-fastest time in the country that year.

The race starts from the same start as the Brighton Marathon in Preston Park, just 45 minutes beforehand at 9.00am. The course is fast and flat, taking participants through the city centre and finishing at the same finish as the marathon, on Madeira Drive.

Each year we see many groups and families take part in the BM10k and the marathon, allowing 10k participants to start in the same park and then cheer their marathon runners on after they have finished.

Seaford Martello Half Marathon

Join Team Wolo for the return of this popular half marathon, after a Covid-enforced absence of a year. This scenic race is an off road half marathon, using the undulating paths and trails in and around the South Downs.

This is a long standing event which was originally designed as an event for runners, walkers, and cyclists - under its former guise as the Seaford Martello Triple Challenge. In 2019 it was decided to restrict the event to runners and re name it as the Martello Half Marathon. This has proved very successful and has helped increase participation numbers.

The event is open to runners of all abilities, from novices to experienced athletes and there will be medals on offer to all finishers.

The course bests for the men and women are well under 2hrs10min and 2:29, making it the second-fastest marathon in the UK. It is also the second-largest marathon in the UK and eighth-largest in Europe.

Since the first Brighton Marathon in 2010, the Brighton Marathon has grown dramatically to become the Brighton Marathon Weekend attracting larger numbers of runners and spectators each year to the city.

Join Wolo Foundation at the delightful Follers Manor as it opens its gates to the public on one of its few garden open days this Sunday.

The award-winning gardens will be open on Sunday 4 July 2021 from 11am – 4pm. All proceeds will help raise funds for Wolo Foundation - Helping families affected by cancer in Sussex.

The gardens at Follers Manor boast unspoilt views of the South Downs National Park. Breath-taking areas of natural beauty and most recently featured on Alan Titchmarsh’s ‘Britain’s Best Back Gardens,’ the garden has featured on several other programmes and won multiple awards for its stunning landscape.

Designed by Ian Kitson, the gardens are recognised for being an innovative, inspirational, and iconic cultural landscape. The sunken garden is a particularly beautiful feature, with sheep grazing nearby.

The gardens will be open from 11am- 4pm. Entry is £8 per adult and children are free of charge. Cash is preferred. Refreshments, a tombola and other stalls will be available. Wolo merchandise will also be available to purchase on the day.

There is free parking 5 minutes walk from the gardens. Parking will be clearly signposted on the day. Some of the garden is uneven, and there a few steps, so not all areas are wheelchair accessible.
